Student Cell Phone Policy

Cell Phone Policy for Students (aligned to the recently passed Tennessee State Law)

During school hours cell phones must be switched off and placed in the student’s locker.
A student may possess any electronic device (cell phones, headphones, iPads, tablets, speakers, watches, etc.) on school property, at after-school activities, and at school-related functions, provided that during school hours and on a school bus the cell phone remains off, not on vibrate, and is in their locker. They should not be seen at all unless they are used for instructional purposes and monitored by the teacher.
Possession of a cellular telephone by a student is a privilege. All devices brought to the school are at the student’s own risk. The school is not responsible for damaged, lost, or stolen electronics. Searches or investigations will not be conducted for damaged, lost, or stolen electronics.
Any student who fails to abide by the terms of this policy will forfeit their cell phones.
Any student failing to follow the above procedures and policies will have their cell phone confiscated until a parent or guardian is able to sign out the device from the front office.
A student in possession of a personal communication device in violation of this policy is subject to related disciplinary action.
If there is an emergency, parents and guardians must contact the front office.

The Tennessee Legislature has adopted a new law that prohibits students from using mobile phones during the traditional school day. Students will be permitted to possess their phones, but they must be put away during the school day except in limited circumstances.

First Offense

Phones will be confiscated.
Students will receive 1st warning.
Parents will be required to come to the school to retrieve phone during school hours 9am–4pm and sign for the device.

Second Offense

Phones will be confiscated.
Students will receive 2nd warning.
Students will be assigned to After School detention.
Parents will be required to come to the school to retrieve phone during school hours 9am–4pm and sign out the device.

Third Offense or More

Phones will be confiscated.
Students will receive MIT for up to three days or Out-of-School Suspension for up to three days.
Parents will be required to come to the school to retrieve phones during school hours 9am–4pm and sign out the device.
Parent conference will be required to enter into agreement banning phones for remainder of the school year.
Students who return to school in violation of the agreement (found with the phone) will be referred for disciplinary action.

Severe Clause: Highly inappropriate activities, including but not limited to:

Text messaging that contains inappropriate content, profanity, intimidation, or threats to others
Cheating on tests
Taking or showing inappropriate photographs
Calling outside groups or individuals to participate in fights, retaliate, or participate in other inappropriate activities on school grounds or at school-related events
Refusal to relinquish phones to persons of authority upon request
Continued violations of offense or violations of the severe clause may result in suspension from school for up to 10 days and/or referral to a Discipline Coordinator. The student in possession of a cell phone on school property or during school-related events is responsible for its care.
